Creative Home Herb Garden Ideas

Designing and growing your herb garden is fun and exciting. You can choose from the simple rectangular patio design, to a quarter-circle corner or a full circle wagon wheel design, to a more complex and intricate knot and twine patterns. The designs are seemingly endless but unfortunately, most of these are only doable if you have a good-sized backyard to work on.

Which leaves the average home owners with few choices to choose from such as windowsill herb garden or growing herbs in strawberry planters. But you may find these too common nowadays. You might want something more uniquely pretty but still practical.

Lack of space must not deter you from enjoying and designing a beautiful herb garden, whether inside or outside your house. Herbs are fairly easy to grow and can practically thrive anywhere, as long as their needs are met. And because of this, all you might need is a little stretch of the imagination to come up with something creative and at the same time, will work with the resources available to you.

Many similar designs exist using milk jugs, plastic jars, tin cans, etc. But what makes this idea unique is it uses the upper part of the bottle upside down (normally, the bottom part is used) and collectively creates a different structure. You can even use old fabric to dress up the bottle for a more dainty look.

If there's no suitable space anywhere inside and outside your house, there's plenty up there, in the rooftop. Just make sure that you have an easy access to your roof. And that you're not acrophobic.

Now, an ultimate space saver and a great wall decor, too! Vertical herb garden is indeed a fitting choice if you're really tight on space. (I'm just not too sure how you can water herbs in this setup.)

A DIY alternative to the vertical planter, old shoe cases allow you to have the same upright and space-efficient design without having to spend much. Although this looks ideal only for outdoor garden, you can try to fix one indoors if you can find an effective way to take care of drained water.

An ingenious garden design created by Ed and Lisa Applebaum, who wanted to screen their house from the street. There wasn't much space between the two, so planting trees was not a viable option.

Then they thought of this. And it turned out to be not only a great house screen, but an innovative herb garden design as well.

Necessity is the mother of invention. Maybe it was the need to conserve water, or the need to conserve space, or the need to come up with some bright and smart for the Spring Greening Contest. But whatever it was, Nibha Jain and Srikanth Jalasutram's Green Dish Rack is designed to dry your dinnerware, or maybe anything for that matter, and collect drained water which will then water your herbs, in a killing-two-birds-with-one-stone fashion.

Although not exactly space-saving, this is a lovely idea to accentuate your home herb garden. It was created by Sue and Peter Hill for the 4Head Healing Herb Garden entry to the Chelsea Flower Show. This surely beats using gnome and other garden statues.

Maybe not something as big and as grand as this mud statue, but the idea is create a focal element that will highlight your herbs. Works better if you have a theme or concept too.
